Ville about piracy
Sessions, 09.11.2004
First of all they talked about the reasons why people don't buy CDs that much anymore in Finland. They were asked if the prices are too high. A.W. thinks they are not too expensive, because there's so much work behind a CD. Ville, on the other hand, thinks that they are too expensive. He said that if the price was, say, 14 or 15 euros instead od 20 or so, there would be a psychological difference in the price and it would make it easier for young people to buy them. They usually don't have that much money, and 20 is a lot for them. He said that if the price was like 15 euros, they could easily buy 2 CDs then instead of one for 20.
Then about piracy itself. Ville said that there's a difference between the REAL piracy where some instances make copies of CDs and then sell them somewhere and netpiracy. He hates the first type, but said that HIM have to thank downloading from the net partly for the success they've had so far in the US (besides Bam, which he also mentioned..). The actual piracy is bad for many reasons. First, Ville thinks that when there's a CD it's the whole package that counts. The music, the art, the covers, everything makes together the album. He referred it to a book. He thinks you should enjoy music in the same way you do with books. It's also a whole package and it should be cherished as such - and bought in a shop. Second, he said that he doesn't like the fact that the copied versions usually are of a quite bad quality. He makes music of high quality where everything needs to be the way they've thought it to be and when people then listen to those crappy versions it makes his music cheap. "And I'm not cheap", he said... Third, there's the criminal aspect in it. Many times the instance behind pirate CDs are connected to criminal activities, drugs etc. When someone buys pirate CDs he also supports that kind of criminality. And that's a bad thing.
